Graphics 12: Book Covers

I love this project.  My senior design students are asked to choose their favourite novel and redesign the packaging for it.  The Imagery must be photographic in nature and must represent, symbolically, thematically or metaphorically the novel itself.  They must design the type as well, keeping in mind visual hierarchy and applying symbolically appropriate design decisions (commonly, the most difficult aspect of this project). they must include synopsis', author bio and photo, reviews, and publishers marks in a realistic and appropriate manner.  Not only that - all of this needs to be formatted into a document that wraps around an actual book perfectly.  I love challenging my students - especially my senior ones - as it is so gratifying when they meet, and exceed, those challenges.

Graphics 9: Collecting Type

A great little project that acts as an introduction to typography and it's application in everyday design.  It also asks students to consider photography practices (focus and framing) and photoshop functions as well as presentation decisions (I also have them make Adobe Bridge contact sheets that displays more thoroughly, their typography explorations).

GRAPHICS 12: Logos

An exhaustive Logo design project for my seniors focusing on process, idea development and Adobe Illustrator skills.  It takes almost all of term 1 but really hammers home foundational and flexible design skills that I feel they will use throughout their career, as long as it may be.
