Senior Design students are asked to redesign the covers of their favourite novels. They are to use symbolic Photographic imagery, design their text and all other components of the dust jacket. One of my favourite assignments.

Graphics 12: Book Covers

I love this project.  My senior design students are asked to choose their favourite novel and redesign the packaging for it.  The Imagery must be photographic in nature and must represent, symbolically, thematically or metaphorically the novel itself.  They must design the type as well, keeping in mind visual hierarchy and applying symbolically appropriate design decisions (commonly, the most difficult aspect of this project). they must include synopsis', author bio and photo, reviews, and publishers marks in a realistic and appropriate manner.  Not only that - all of this needs to be formatted into a document that wraps around an actual book perfectly.  I love challenging my students - especially my senior ones - as it is so gratifying when they meet, and exceed, those challenges.

GRAPHICS 12: Logos

An exhaustive Logo design project for my seniors focusing on process, idea development and Adobe Illustrator skills.  It takes almost all of term 1 but really hammers home foundational and flexible design skills that I feel they will use throughout their career, as long as it may be.

People of Point Grey volume 3

Our third issue of PPG comes in a year when the talent and enthusiasm of our senior design class reaches new heights and our photography students, though perhaps suffering from an accute case of “senioritus”, tackeled their assignments with gusto.  We continue striving to showcase not only the creative talents of our design and photography students but the diversity of talent and interests within our community beyond those commonly recognized for their athletic or academic pursuits.  We have kept many things the same but changed a few, moving to a questionnaire format as well as limiting the interior pages to black and white.  Efficiency, unity and a consciousness of budget were behind the decisions but I hope you’ll agree they do nothing to tarnish the shine of our contribution to the Point Grey community.

Below is are the digital files of each spread contained in our print issue - available from your friendly Point Grey Graphics teacher for free!

Graphic Design 12: Infographics 2019

Last year's terrific batch of senior graphic design students absolutely knocked it out of the park with our most challenging assignment of the year.  The amount of thought and skill that went into these is really impressive.  The assignment, of course, is to visually communicate a fairly complex subject of their own choice using as few words as possible.  The project requires them to use all the process based strategies they have practiced throughout their time in our program as well as illustrator skills and a study of the use of charts, graphs, timelines and diagrams in graphic design.

Graphics 12: Book Covers

An annual assignment for my Grade 12 Graphic Design students and one of my favourites.  They have to do their own photography, plan the imagery to connect with symbols or themes from the book, include a synopsis, author bio, review bites, publisher mark and title design.  It's definitely a journey but well worth it considering the quality of the designs that were submitted.

Graphics Design 12: Logo Design

Graphics Design 12: Logo Design

A senior design project to develop your own logo as a designer.  Emphasis on process takes another step forward in our grade 12 class in which we expect students to rigorously develop ideas and imagery and, similar to a math class, SHOW YOUR WORK!

COMMERCIAL DESIGN 12: ALBUM COVER DESIGN

This was the last assignment of the year: the cover design for a "best of" compilation of a favourite band.  I wanted something fun and personally fulfilling and the class requested a project that was very process oriented - music to my ears!  Link to the assignment here.
