GRAPHICS 10 - PATTERN AND REPETITION

A project that begins with a simple symmetrical paper collage with geometric shapes of various sizes and versions of a colour.  We scan our collages, clean them up in photoshop and then explore techniques of copying, pasting, repetition, resizing, and eliminating to create complex and dynamic patterns.  I love projects like this, that start with an elementary exploration of colour and develop into something truly beautiful while hitting on so many design lessons and teach practical Photoshop application methods.

Graphics 11: Lyrical Layouts

Lyrical Layouts is a poster design project that asks students to work with grid-based compositions and work with Visual Hierarchy to create a graphic interpretation of their favourite song.  They used Indesign to compose their layouts.  I love this assignment.  It allows for a ton of creative freedom but touches on a bunch of design points that we have covered in other assignments.

Graphics 11: Paper Words

This a really quick easy assignment, asking students to explore paper as a material and different construction methods.  I always tell students, when given a problem, to solve it the most creative way they can; find a solution that is surprising and original and different from anyone else's.  I think this is generally a good way to approach any design problem.

CUT AND PASTE (Photo 12)

I was thrilled to accept an invitation, on behalf of my senior photography class, to participate in the inaugural BC edition of the Flash Forward Incubator program - a collaborative presentation of the Magenta Foundation and The Capture Photography Festival.  That's a mouthful but what it really means is that we got to partner with some really amazing people to produce photographic work in collaboration with a wonderful arts-based education organization with an exhibition taking place between April 23rd and April 29th 2018 at the Roundhouse Community Arts Center.  A wonderful opportunity for students to get feedback from industry professionals and have their work professionally printed, framed and presented in an exhibition. I couldn't be more proud of them.  Some really wonderful work was created around the theme of Cut and Paste.

Graphics 11: Lego Alphabet

Recently brought in a bunch of Lego and have had a ton of fun incorporating it into various courses. Here, a senior design class uses it to design and construct assigned letterforms.  The challenge here was to construct a free standing 3-dimensional letterform that contained a specific colour scheme and used the construction method as creatively as possible.  I love these, although some of the photography is whack - my fault...
